AARP Meeting Includes Medication Disposal

Warren County Sheriff officers, left to right, Dirk Massaro and Dale Nauta, pictured with Pat Kollar, Washington Township Municipal Alliance Coordinator, were on hand to collect unused, unwanted, and expired prescription drugs for safe disposal at the monthly meeting of Warren County AARP members.

A permanent Project Medicine Drop Box is installed in the Warren County Courthouse in Belvidere under the Sheriff’s Department’s purview.  Undersheriff William Lundon stated that since it was installed in 2013, they have collected and destroyed 820 pounds of old prescription medication. In 2014, the department also recognized a need for a mobile unit to go out into the community and assist those who could not drive to the collection site. In July 2015, they received the PMD mobile container and have since offered safe disposal of old medication at numerous Warren County events, such as at the monthly AARP meetings in Phillipsburg.

All medication is transported by the Sheriff’s Department periodically to Covanta Energy in Oxford, where the drugs are destroyed.
