Sports Chatter, Football Trivia

By Andy Loigu

It is hard to believe that 11 years have passed since Dan Hirshberg invited me to be the “trivia guy” at a Super Bowl eve party, presented by the NFL’s Super Bowl Host Committee. It drew a number of “superfans” who attended the only Super Bowl ever played in New Jersey in February of 2014. A large contingent of fans and VIP’S gathered at The Inn at Millrace Pond on Johnsonburg Road in Hope, just a couple of minutes away from I-80.

The answer to just about any NFL related trivia question can be found online these days, assuming you visit a trusted source. However, most of the people at this particular party who won prizes for correctly answering my questions, shot their hands up just a microsecond after the question was asked. Only when someone blurted out a wrong guess, like the guy who thought Don Maynard scored the Jets’ only Super Bowl touchdown, did someone who researched the answer via smartphone get the prize.

Well, with the next Big Game quickly approaching as we start 2026, I’ll offer up another trivia quiz you can use at your parties to show off how well you know the NFL. I’ll list the questions first, then the answers before Elvis leaves the building.

Questions

1. Name the two teams who played the infamous “Tuck Rule Game.”

2, How many interceptions did Joe Montana throw in his four Super Bowl games?

3. How many minor league baseball games did John Elway play for the Yankees’ Single-A affiliate in the summer of 1982?

4. Who was the inductee in the Hall of Fame’s 2021 class who retired as the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns?

5, Name the three franchises who joined the NFL after the 1949 season. All three of them have won Super Bowl championships since then.

6. Who was the first NFL quarterback to top 40,000 career passing yards?

7,  A current player holds the lowest interception rate in NFL history. He set an NFL record when he threw 402 consecutive passes without an interception in 2018.

8. Who holds the NFL record for most career interceptions thrown, with 336? On the positive side, he threw 508 career passes for touchdowns.

9. Who is considered, with little argument, to be the greatest quarterback to never win a Super Bowl game.

10. Name two New Jersey natives named Joe who have quarterbacked a Super Bowl win.

Answers

1. Patriots and Raiders.

2. None. He did throw 11 touchdown passes and averaged 285.5 passing yards per Super Bowl game.

3. He played in 42 games, with a team-high 25 runs batted in. He was a legitimate prospect.

4. It was NFL legend turned comedian Peyton Manning, Eli’s older brother.

5, A pro league called the All-American Football Conference folded in the late 1940s after the Cleveland Browns dominated the circuit, winning four straight championships. Joining the Browns as merged teams were the Baltimore Colts and San Francisco 49ers. When the Browns’ franchise won the 2000 crown, it had another home city and name, Baltimore Ravens.

6. It was Johnny Unitas, nicknamed the “Golden Arm.” He led the Baltimore Colts to league championships in 1958, 59 and January of 1971. In 1957 Johnny U began a streak of 47 straight games with at least one touchdown pass, a record that lasted 52 years before Drew Brees of New Orleans broke it.

7. It was four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers.

8. It was “The Gunslinger” Brett Favre, who never was accused of conservative play calling.

9. It is Dan Marino, who wore number 13. Some may make a case for Buffalo’s Jim Kelly or Minnesota’s Fran Tarkenton. In today’s NFL, Josh Allen of Buffalo and Lamar Jackson of The Ravens are having outstanding careers but still are seeking the ultimate prize.

10. They are Joe Theisman (South River, Middlesex County) with Washington and Joe Flacco (Audubon/Camden County) with Baltimore.

Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.
