Auditions for Whippoorwill at Centenary Slated; Special Meteors Show Highlights Understudies

Auditions for the new play, “Whippoorwill” by Ruth Kirschner, to be produced by the Centenary Stage Company, will be held by appointment only on Friday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Kutz Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center, 715 Grand Avenue, Hackettstown, on the campus of Centenary University.

Aspiring performers unable to attend may send resumes, headshots, and reels to boxoffice@centenarystageco.org Att: Casting. Performers may prepare a monologue appropriate to the material or read from sides. Sides can be found online at centenarystageco.org and will also be provided the day of auditions. Whippoorwill was submitted for the 2019 Women Playwrights Series. It tells the story of 9-year-old Bibi and her mother in suburban Ohio. They have made a good life for themselves, but Bibi is determined to get to the bottom of what really happened with her missing father, about whom her mother tells a different story each time she asks.

Parts are: Francine: (offer out) Bibi’s single mom, parenting blogger; Larry: (offer out) Francine’s Ex, Bibi’s Father, Afghan War Veteran, Wanderer; Bibi: (offer out) 9 ¾ years, Francine and Larry’s daughter, on the cusp; Mrs. Newcastle: (offer out) Age 80, Francine’s next-door neighbor; Andrew: (offer out) 50s, Jamaican Rastafari Uber driver; Morgue Attendant: Male, 30-40; Motel Clerk/Radio Host: Male.

Offers are out for roles, as noted above, but submissions will still be accepted for those parts.

Understudies Get Their Due At Special Meteors Performance

The four understudies will have their chance on stage in a special performance of “Meteor Shower” at Centenary Stage Company on Wednesday, March 2, at 7 p.m.

The show is a fundraiser for the NextStage Repertory, the all-student performance division of Centenary’s theater deparment, and tickets will be $10 each. Meteor Show is a one-act play by comedian, actor and banjo player Steve Martin.

The understudies are Emily Kurnides as Corky, Cody Jackson as Norm, Luis Rodriguez as Gerald, and Veronica Gaspar as Laura. Kurnides and Rodriguez appeared in Centenary Stage Company’s production of A Christmas Carol, as well as NextStage Repertory’s production of Alice in Slasherland. Veronica Gaspar was seen in NextStage’s productions of Alice in Slasherland and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Cody Jackson was most recently seen in NextStage’s production of Book of Days as well as Centenary Stage Company’s production of A Christmas Carol.
