Cathy’s Pic Of Week Snaps Zombies From The Past

Cathy Miller’s People of the Week goes back in time, but with Halloween soon upon us, timely right now! In 2011, the Skyland Roller Girls, a women’s roller derby team based in Hackettstown, was considering a means to raise funds and have fun. They decided on a full-size, full-color themed calendar featuring the skaters in standard derby gear, posing in decidedly non-standard situations, with skates being an integral component of each photo (i.e. riding a horse, preparing income taxes, sunning poolside). In this photo, Zombie Southern Jezebelle (left) and Zombie Shark Attack (right) roam the ruins of the Spring Valley Christian Church and Cemetery, located in Hardwick and built in 1840. Of note, even zombie skaters think safety and use a helmet, despite it being cracked and bloodied. This photo session attracted a few bystanders, and a couple artists as well, who were there to set up easels and paint the gorgeous and venerable grounds. Fun fact: Southern Jezebelle created all the gruesome make-up effects.

Cathy Miller, an award-winning photographer who’s been capturing the faces of Warren County for many years, has had her work appear in numerous publications, local, statewide, and beyond.
