For the Persons of Week it was Play (WIFFLE) Ball!

By Cathy Miller

The 23rd Annual Warren County WIFFLE Ball Tournament had the first ball thrown out at 10 a.m. on Aug. 7, thus continuing an all-day tradition that draws teams from all over. Held behind the Franklin Township Fire Department Station #3 in Asbury, Whiffle Ball is not just a kids’ game. Some describe it as a gentleman’s game and while there is competition, the day is about fun, food, and beverages.

Running concurrently on four separate playing fields, after several rounds of preliminary play and the semi-finals, the field was narrowed from 24 teams to two. The final game, between the Lava Turtles and Washington’s Teeth, both from Washington Borough, ended with the Lava Turtles securing the 2021 championship with a 9-0 win (team photo above, Washington’s Teeth below).

Chris Cannavo, of Washington’s Teeth, commented, “We had an awesome run of intense beer fueled competition and were definitely outmatched by some of the most incredible WIFFLE ball pitching I’ve ever experienced in the Lava Turtles’ Craig Lawson.”

The MVP was Roy Lawson and the Rookie of the Year was Peter Warsen from Washington’s Teeth.

The President of Warren County WIFFLE Ball and Tournament organizer, Brad Sigler, from Asbury, presented the MVP and Championship trophies.
