Hackettstown Free Public Library Goes Fine-Free on Most Children’s Items

Beginning on June 1, the Hackettstown Free Public Library will no longer be charging overdue fees on children’s items. The only exceptions will be on more expensive items like videogames, Wonderbooks, and Launchpads.

This change in policy is thanks to a generous donation from Man Skirt Brewing and its owner, Joseph Fisher. “Since becoming a Trustee for the library, I have learned that fines do not dissuade people from returning items on time. All they do is create a barrier to those who can’t afford to pay. I hope this donation allows more families to enjoy the library,” Mr. Fisher said.

Children’s items checked out from the library will still have due dates and borrowers will still have to pay if they lose or damage something. Borrowers are asked to be respectful of others who may be waiting to take out those materials next and are encouraged to return items on time so everyone can enjoy access. Outstanding overdue fines on children’s materials borrowed from the Hackettstown Free Public Library will also be waived.

“I’m proud that our library is joining the growing number locally and nationwide that are no longer charging overdue fines,” said Jerry Galante, Director of the Hackettstown Free Public Library. “While our policy so far is limited to children’s items, I’d like to see us go completely fine-free in the near future.” Studies that have examined fine-free policies find that after libraries make the change, there are notable increases in library card registrations, borrowing, and rate of return. Library Director Jerry Galante considers those benefits, but has another goal in mind. “Not charging fines allows us to be more patron and customer service focused. That makes every exchange at the front desk and every library visit a more pleasant one.”
