TD Bank Awards $250,000 Grant To Norwescap

Norwescap, whose work empowers thousands of individuals and families to move away from the crisis of poverty and towards a future of prosperity, was recently awarded a $250,000 Housing for Everyone grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®.

Norwescap, which serves Warren, Sussex, Morris, Hunterdon and Somerset counties, is one of 33 organizations selected from more than 357 applicants to receive a Housing for Everyone grant as part of the TD Charitable Foundation’s annual grant program helping to provide affordable housing since 2005.

The grant will support a significant expansion of Norwescap’s services to assist families who are housing-insecure throughout northwestern New Jersey. Through this funding, Norwescap will grow its team by adding Housing Navigators, who will provide specialized, location-specific guidance to families who are struggling to find or retain affordable housing. These Housing Navigators will support families in navigating housing resources, while also connecting them to a wide array of additional services including nutritional assistance, financial coaching, employment support, and childcare assistance to support their long-term success.

The long-standing housing affordability crisis has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, and housing organizations have worked tirelessly to meet the increasing need for assistance from individuals and families. The growing need for assistance has strained affordable housing organizations and made it difficult to continue delivering critical resources and services. In 2020, Norwescap implemented a participant success process to provide comprehensive needs assessments to individuals who enroll in their services.

Over the last two years, housing has emerged as one of the most pressing concerns for Norwescap’s participants. In 2021, at the time of intake, more than 16% of households were experiencing some form of homelessness, and another 43% were in an unaffordable, unsustainable housing situation. Without resident services from affordable housing providers, like eviction assistance and housing search assistance, many individuals and families will struggle to find or risk losing a safe, affordable place to call home.

“Housing is one of the most fundamental human needs, and yet the housing support resource system is one of the most complex and difficult to navigate,” said Dr. Chris Kirk, Norwescap’s Chief Program Officer. “These new Housing Navigators will ensure that more individuals and families get the critical assistance they need in the moment, and ongoing, holistic support to help them move from suffering to thriving — from homeless or at-risk of losing their home to having an affordable place to live, and maybe even owning it.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for people across our state, and one of the challenges that has become increasingly more difficult is the task of finding a safe, affordable place to call home. With support from the TD Charitable Foundation, Norwescap will be able to build on incredible work they are already doing and provide the wraparound services people need to feel confident about their future,” said Mike Carbone, Regional President for Metro Pennsylvania/Metro New Jersey at TD Bank.

The TD Charitable Foundation awarded $5.8 million through the 16th annual Housing for Everyone grant competition to a total of 33 organizations across TD Bank’s Maine-to-Florida footprint and Michigan to help support affordable housing organizations provide critical resident services. Since 2005, the TD Charitable Foundation has given more than $42 million dollars to non-profit and charitable organizations through the Housing for Everyone grant competition and helped support over 500 affordable housing projects and initiatives. The Housing for Everyone grant competition supports TD’s longstanding commitment to community enrichment through TD’s corporate citizenship platform, The Ready Commitment, which actively promotes inclusivity, economic vitality and environmental wellbeing, enabling people of all backgrounds to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
