Tigers Looking To Defend Freedom Golf Title

By Zack Martino
The Hackettstown High School golf team is looking to carry their success from 2017 into the 2018 season, and even before they’ve yet to tee off, there is good reason to think that they have a good chance to do just that. The team went 16-3 last year en route to winning the Freedom Division championship and will, for the most part, have the same team returning.

Among those returning for head coach Mike Andrusin are junior Erik Jagnandan, who was First Team All Freedom selection, and seniors Nick Dudes and Ryan Hara, who were both Second Team All Freedom selections. The fourth member of the varsity squad for Hackettstown is junior Dan Canavan, who will be relied on to provide a varsity score in every match according to Andrusin.

Freshman Derek Weaver is also looking to make an impact on his new team.

“Weaver enters high school golf with an accomplished Junior Golf resume and will look to make an immediate impact in the lineup and the Freedom Division landscape,” Andrusin said.

Andrusin expects the competition to be tough in 2018, but already has a mark he wants to reach and sees an advantage held by his team.

“A sixth Freedom Division championship in eight seasons is the immediate goal at hand for the Tigers,” he said. “All four varsity golfers, JagnandanDudas, Hara and Canavan, have played in the lineup and are familiar with the away courses in the Freedom Division.”

In addition to defending their Freedom Division title, the Tigers are also trying to clinch another berth in the Group 2 North 2 after finishing fifth last season.

Hackettstown first match will be against Wallkill Valley at Wallkill Golf Course on April 9.
