With the company that has been doing the fireworks for Washington Celebrates America for many years unable to provide them this year, there will be no fireworks in Washington on July 4th.

But the good news is that with the celebration on the verge of entirely being canceled, several community members have come forward to ensure that the annual parade and orange crate derby will continue as planned. It is hoped that fireworks can return next year.

“I am excited that many new volunteers are working to make this year’s Washington Celebrates America as memorable as it can be,” said Rich Maguire, the longtime committee chair.

Maguire noted that the fireworks company had offered other dates, but they were not on the 4th and were on inconvenient days of the week.

The committee had also faced a shortage of volunteers. In the early spring it was announced that Washington Celebrates America might have to be canceled as a result. Public meetings ensued and a number of new people got involved. Thus, rather than cancel the entire event, the old-fashioned parade and orange crate derby will continue this year. Other activities are also being considered for the day.

The WCA committee needs volunteers in every area. If you can help at the Orange Crate Derby or the Parade please email washingtoncelebratesamerica@gmail.com with attention to Rich Maguire, III or visit washingtoncelebratesamerica.com and select “Join the Community.”
