Washington To Celebrate Arbor Day This Friday

The Washington Borough Shade Tree Commission & Green Team, in conjunction with the Karen Nash Memorial Butterfly Garden & KNMBG Garden Club is inviting everyone to its 2022 Arbor Day Celebration on the lawn of Memorial School’s KNMBG Butterfly Garden, located at 300 W. Stewart St., Washington.

The free event takes place this Friday, April 29 (Raindate: Sat. April 30 same time). Arrive by 6:30 p.m. The ceremony takes place 6:45 to 8 p.m. Attendees should bring their own refreshments if they wish (no glass, no alcoholic beverages.) Bring a folding chair or picnic blanket and spread out on the lawn beside the Butterfly Garden in front of Memorial School. Please maintain social distancing. Masks are optional. This event is in honor of Arbor Day about the reasons for trees, reminding us of the benefits trees provide to all of us.

Highlights include many community groups of all ages: Sylvia Hollister will perform flute music in the garden before the ceremony, the Washington Fire Dept. will display the American Flag, Deborah Schliefe will sing, Girl Scout Troops from Service Unit 90 will provide the Flag Ceremony and Grab and Go kid’s crafts, Boy Scout Troop 154/157 will greet visitors, Teens: Precious and Trinity Thiirah will perform instrumental selections, Deputy Mayor Ethel Conry will read the Arbor Day Proclamation, Founding Teacher Advisor, Jody Higgins will be a guest presenter, Eagle Scout, Ryan Carey of Boy Scout Troop 141 will dedicate the Sweetgum Tree to Evan Murray with bagpipe music by Jim McAleer. children will plant a pawpaw tree, and the public will meet members of the Green Team, Shade Tree Commission, and the Karen Nash Memorial Butterfly Garden and Garden Club.

The school grounds are a smoke free zone. Dogs are not permitted when children are present. Upon entering the school driveway, please drive slowly with care. Optional: Consider donating canned goods for the Food Drive or donate bagged clean used clothing for the Clothing Drive for the yellow clothing drive shed. The Clothing Drive benefits the school garden.

This event is free and open to the public, there will be a “Cash for a Cause” donation can at the KNMBG Booth to go towards the cost of the school garden’s new trees. The KNMBG Inc. is a 501-c-3, not-for-profit educational organization. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
