Can’t Get to Sleep? Charlie Ponders Photo of Week

Just Where Did Warren County Get Its Name?

As the old saying goes, “Let’s cut to the chase!” and get this show rolling.

QUESTION:  Where did Warren County, NJ get it’s name from?

QUICK ANSWER:  Dr. Joseph Warren of Boston, whose death at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775 served as an inspiration to the budding American Revolution.

As famous columnist Paul Harvey would say, “For the rest of the story!” go to – Warren County Historical Tidbits 5-10 Dr Joseph Warren.pdf

To get to the crux of the question – and story – I went to various online resources and did my research! The attached photos were gleaned from those resources, as well. Joseph Warren was just a little bit before my time, otherwise I’d be asking him if I could take his photo!

And now for a history lesson…

Joseph Warren was born on June 11, 1741 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He was educated at Harvard University, and went on to briefly teach at the Latin school in Massachusetts before he decided to finish his schooling and become a physician. Dr. Joseph Warren married Elizabeth Hooten on September 6, 1764.

Joseph Warren is forever stamped in our minds as the hero who lost his life on Bunker Hill, at the early age of 34. However, there was much more to the young physician’s life than his ill-timed death.

“…[If] it appears that the only way to safety is through fields of blood, I know you will not turn your faces from our foes, but will undauntedly press forward until tyranny is trodden underfoot…”

Dr. Joseph Warren, March 5, 1775, three months before he was killed in battle.

STORY BEHIND PHOTO OF THE WEEK

This has been a hectic nine days, beginning with a routine pre operation Doctor’s visit at Morristown Hospital on Thursday November 26th getting ready for a right hip replacement.  Long story short, couple other issues ‘popped up’ during that exam, (nothing major) BUT, enough to cancel, a busy schedule leading to the operation, which was to take place Dec.22nd!  OK, so now, I have been bouncing around trying to make NEW Doctor appointments and also CANCEL old appointments!  Keep in mind two things, FIRST, ***ticked off about the postponed operation***, THAT WAS MY CHRISTMAS GIFT!  Finally get take care of this and eventually be able to begin hiking again!  SECONDLY, between Doctors and regular other activities totally didn’t pay any mind to my Photo of the Week article!!

OK, Bringing you up to date, It is now, Saturday, Saturday, Dec. 4th, say about 3 a.m. I am, under the covers, as the ole saying describes, “Snug, As a bug, In a rug” comfortably sleeping, when my “TOUCH SENSES” begin registering, gentle pats to my head, from atop the covers, followed by an exhilarating, COLD/DAMP sensation at the tip of my nose!!  I am AWAKE, looking, eyeball to eyeball and still nose to nose at my cat Cleo under the covers!

This is a normal occurrence, my cats Cleo and Lucy, both seem to like to verify, that it is in fact ME, under the covers!  Usually, I can fall back to sleep pretty quickly! Not this time. I am waiting to drift back off asleep, BUT, I am asking myself, What is your Photo of the Week going to be about? I am also envisioning Doctors, History, etc., etc.!  Don’t ask me how but I somehow put together Dr. Joseph Warren & the naming of Warren County, which I did get out of bed and write down!  Then, finally, I was able to fall back asleep!

After reviewing my notes from above, wondering if I should make another Doctor’s appointment – For a “Checkup from the Neck-up”  **At least I have my Photo of the Week article!**

NOTE:  You noticed I capitalized ‘BEAUTIFUL’ in the subject matter, I figure that gives me an opportunity to include a couple of photos showcasing BEAUTIFUL Warren County!  I have also included two pictures that I photographed from online of Maj. Gen. Dr. Joseph Warren, III

I am a member of the Warren County Bi-Centennial Cultural & Heritage Advisory Board.  We are advising and assisting in preparing various events, programs etc. from now until 2024 getting ready for the Bi-Centennial Celebrations for Warren County.  This very question had come up at one of our meetings
