Cathy Miller’s People of the Week: Warren Haven Celebrates Two Centenarians

Warren Haven Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Oxford has a special tradition of honoring residents attaining the age of 100. It’s a special event for both staff and family, and a sweet way to commemorate their centenarians.

Being honored on June 21 were Helen Carroll, 102, and Barbara Courtright, 100, and the entire Warren Haven staff pitched in to ensure a memorable event.

Helen Carroll celebrated her 102nd birthday on June 14, 2023. She was born in Orange, NJ in 1921 to Ann Marie and Camille Surmont. She has been a Jersey Girl for most of her life and a resident of Warren Haven since 2012.



Barbara Courtright celebrated her 100th birthday on June 29, 2023. She was born in Prospect, NY in 1923 to Leila and Clarence Nye. She later moved to New Jersey and raised her family here. Warren Haven has been home to Barbara since 2018.

To mark their milestones and fete both Helen Carroll and Barbara Courtright, Warren Haven threw them a big 100th birthday bash. Colorful balloons, streamers and flowers decorated the community Dining Room. As the guests of honor arrived, each woman was draped with a festive “It’s My Birthday” sash and a “Happy Birthday” tiara.

Steve Unger, executive director of Warren County Division of Aging and Disability Services, presented centenarians Barbara and Helen with proclamations from the County for their remarkable accomplishments. Greetings from President Biden were presented as well.

After a tasty lunch, Helen and Barbara were serenaded with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Barbara then made the official first cut into the brightly decorated birthday cake.Warren Haven is honored to have both Helen Carroll and Barbara Courtright as part of their family.
