Charlie Shares Living History Scenes at Millbrook Days

Millbrook Days are days when the old Millbrook re-creation village in Hardwick literally comes back to life! Historians, artisans, crafters and volunteers set up their wares and displays to show what life was like over 150 years ago. A truly fun, entertaining and educational setting for all members of the family, this all takes place amid the beautiful, natural surrounding of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

From Charlie: Testing her skills, a volunteer tosses a rope hoop with the high hopes of getting a ringer over the distant stake.  Not sure which game came first, this or horse shoes!!??  BUT, both of these games evolved into today’s popular Corn Hole game. Photo by Charlie Fineran.

Story behind the Photo of the Week: This past Saturday, Sept. 14, was the first day of Millbrook Day 2019.  Volunteers arrived early to set up their many displays, depicting life at Millbrook Village in the 1800s.  The Friends of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and park employees set up our greeting and display tent.  Sitting down and awaiting the park’s visitors, I observed two ladies in costume, one carrying a little baby also in costume (WHAM- They are going to be my photo of the week!!)  Talking with them to make sure they will be around, game plan, I will meet up with them a little later.  That later was at the Apple Butter Display, as shown in the picture of the week!!

From Charlie: Display showing how early dyes were created and how they were applied to wool. Nuts, fruits, leaves and other plant materials were used to dye wool. Dye was made by soaking the plant item overnight and simmering it. Yarn was then soaked and a ‘mordant,’ such as copper sulphate or iron, was added to make the dye ‘fast’ or set in. NOTE:  MILLBROOK IS A GREAT IDEA FOR NICE FALL FOLIAGE TRIP!!!

Tucked away amid the beautiful Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the trip to Millbrook offers spectacular vistas no matter what route is taken AND once at Millbrook Village you can step through a ‘time barrier’ back to the days when Millbrook was a self-sufficient little island in an ocean of trees.  Remember the word “TREES.” When the foliage is painted with Autumn’s colors, a trip to Millbrook will most certainly be an eye-pleaser!!
