The Warren Hills Debate Team took part in the first-ever virtual mock trial in New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s Northern Regional Competition on Thursday, Feb. 4! In this year’s civil case, a car accident goes wrong when protestors tangle with police on the way home from a demonstration.

Plaintiffs Eli Adam (played by senior Maggie Alder) and Kai Cruz (played by first-year Jacob Adams) sued the fictitious City of Metropolitan for false arrest. Their attorneys, seniors Francie TenEyck and Sam Lewis, argued for their clients in the civil trial against a Sussex County defense team.

While Sussex County won their case, the Warren Hills Debate/Mock Trial Team increased their understanding of the historical, ethical, and philosophical basis of the American system of justice.

The full team also included juniors Bintou Fofana, Tom Finnegan, Yuliana Peregrinets and Precious Thiirah, and seniors Julia Monaco and Julia Teets. The team was led by teacher Penny Giamoni and attorneys Jeff Russo and Kelly Shelton.
