Little Bit Of Elevation Makes The Snowy Difference

Every once in a while, we get one of those days where the temperature lingers close to 32 degrees.

During wet weather the type of precipitation Snow/Rain/Ice is usually determined by the elevation of the surrounding terrain (usually the higher the elevation, the colder the air, meaning better chance for the snow and ice!). The above general rule of thumb is going to be the background story of my Photo Adventure today.

STORY BEHIND PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Monday January 23, 2023: We had a sporadic snowfall in the morning; some areas had no snow at all and some higher elevations had a beautiful thin coating of snow and ice. Throughout my travels that day, I could not help but notice how all the mountain tops were covered and then there was a distinct delineation point where the snow ended. Also while traveling around I noticed some areas had snow and some had no snow at all. I decided to take a journey around Warren County to highlight the concept that ELEVATION & DISTANCE make a difference on days like this.

OBSERVATION  **My only drawback was the sun never really broke through the clouds to LIGHT-UP the snow and ice**  **That would have been some show!!!**

The first set of photos were taken on Maple Lane, Allamuchy Twp. looking east across Tranquility Farm at Allamuchy Mountain in Allamuchy Mountain State Park. The ridge here is about 1000 feet in elevation. Notice there is quite a thin snow zone that hugs pretty close to the summit. This is part of the Highlands in New Jersey.

The next set of photos are taken from the Hope Great Meadows Scenic Overlook just above the Village of Hope. Got some views of the Delaware Water Gap 12 miles away. The distant Water Gap and ridges are part of the Ridge & Valley section of New Jersey. Those mountains are over 1500 feet in elevation, notice how there is a much bigger snow area on those ridges.

The last set of photos I took are from Millbrook Road going into the DWGNRA (Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area). This road literally climbs over the mountain and gives you a close-up in the snow zone view of the area.

Enjoy your ever-changing snow or non snow-scapes!

And of course, enjoy Your Open Space always!
