Norwescap Poised To Build On Sullivan’s Legacy

Norwescap, a leading provider of community and social services in northwest New Jersey, is announcing a redevelopment project on South Main Street in Phillipsburg.

The organization has recently purchased 371 S. Main Street in Phillipsburg, which, for the last 22 years has been home to “Sullivan’s on the Main” family restaurant. The goal of the purchase is to spark new investment, economic and small business development opportunities while preserving a community anchor in the South Main Street District of Phillipsburg.

As part of its unique community development efforts, Norwescap is working in lockstep with local residents, community organizations and businesses to continue building out the South Main Street corridor as a vibrant and thriving community.

“Since 1965, Norwescap has been dedicated to creating opportunities that transform lives through innovative programs and partnerships. That mission will be greatly expanded in the Phillipsburg area with the purchase of Sullivan’s, which is directly across the street from Norwescap’s original headquarters,” said Mark Valli, CEO of Norwescap.

Mack Sullivan, previous owner of Sullivan’s on the Main, shared, “Sullivan’s was our life for 22 years, and we spent the last eight years in this wonderful location. We did and gave what we could to the community. We loved what we did. And we are so thankful that Norwescap is now stepping in to ensure the building remains a place that supports the community and brings people together.”

Norwescap envisions the Sullivan’s location being utilized in diverse ways, i.e. expanding its programs that support and help residents increase their financial stability, supporting entrepreneurship and the growth of small businesses, and attracting community investment.

Valli said, “We are grateful to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs for awarding Norwescap a grant to allow us to purchase this landmark property. We are already in the process of raising funds for the renovations and are looking at sharing several exciting announcements over the next year. Building community is central to Norwescap’s mission and Sullivan’s has been cornerstone of the community, this presents an amazing opportunity to create something special for Phillipsburg. Norwescap is thankful to the Sullivan family for entrusting us with the Sullivan’s legacy.”

Originally established in 1965, Norwescap has evolved into a comprehensive nonprofit organization providing services to nearly 35,000 individuals annually in Morris, Hunterdon, Warren, Somerset and Sussex counties. The organization offers a broad array of services that support and empower people with low to moderate income, helping them move away from the crisis of poverty and towards a future where they can thrive. Norwescap’s programs address immediate needs and build strategies for long term success, focusing on education, employment, financial empowerment, health and nutrition, housing and community development, and volunteerism and civic engagement.
