Panther Valley To Host Prestigious MGA Ike Qualifier

Panther Valley Golf & Country Club has been selected to host another qualifying site for one of the most prestigious events in the Metropolitan area, The MGA Ike Stroke Play Championship.

Set for Panther Valley, in Allamuchy Township, on Tuesday May 15, the Ike Championship has provided its share of excitement over the years, and is one of the organization’s most popular annual tournaments. The Ike tournament was founded in 1953 by Daily News sportswriter Dana Mozley and nurtured through the years by Mozley and former MGA President George Sands. The MGA took over full event coordination in 1986 and it quickly became the area’s premier stroke-play amateur event. The Ike today attracts more entries than any other MGA championship for individuals.

“We are very excited to have been selected as one of the qualifier sites,” said Dan McCarthy, Head Golf Professional at Panther Valley. “It’s a great opportunity for us not only to host, but to be able to showcase our outstanding course to golfers from throughout the metropolitan area.”

The format of the Ike Qualifier is as follow: an 18-Hole Sectional Qualifying Round, 54-Hole Stroke Play Championship. The field is cut after 18 holes. Except for the Championship Winner, all ties for prize purposes will be awarded by the low final round score, followed by the USGA method of matching cards. The competition is open to amateur golfers who are members of an MGA Member Club. A person who does not reside in the MGA territory and who is not a full-time student or employed in the MGA territory, cannot join an MGA Member Club for the purpose of entering the Ike Championship. All entrants must have an individual up-to-date Handicap Index based on ratings for men not exceeding 5.0 under the USGA Handicap System and are subject to the MGA Rules and Regulations.

In all, there will be six qualifier events, concluding on June 7. The Panther Valley date is the second stop on the “tour.”
