Seniors in Warren County interested in the art of Tai Chi to boost mental and physical health can take advantage of county-sponsored classes at multiple, convenient locations throughout the area.

“Tai Chi and Qigong are gentle, flowing exercise programs that benefit balance, flexibility, mobility, internal and external health and wellness,” said Stan Cohen, one of the certified Tai Chi and Qigong teachers who leads classes for the county through the Division of Aging and Disability Services. “Created in China over three thousand years ago, the benefits to people, especially seniors, are well documented as a means of self-care.”

“Tai Chi for Arthritis and Balance” classes are offered at the county’s four senior centers and the Southwest Branch of the Warren County Library. The current schedule is as follows (subject to change):

  • Mondays, check monthly schedule for times, Washington Community Senior Center, 33 Brass Castle Road, Washington
  • Thursdays, 9 a.m., Southwest Branch of the Warren County Library, 404 Route 519, Phillipsburg
  • Thursdays, 10:30 a.m., Phillipsburg Senior Center, 310 Firth St.
  • Fridays, 11 a.m., Hackettstown Community Senior Center, 293 Main St., Hackettstown
  • Fridays, 11 a.m., North Warren Community Senior Center, 505 Route 94, Columbia

Grant funded, attendance at these classes is only a $1 suggested donation for in-county residents aged 60 and older or $3 for out-of-county or under-60 participants. Each class includes traditional Qigong forms as well as balance and mobility exercises and techniques. There are no physical requirements for participation, said Cohen, but those who have concerns should consult their doctors before starting any new exercise program.

“I am inspired by the results those who attend classes on a regular basis achieve,” said Cohen. “There are many stories of improved balance, improved mobility and better relaxation and state of mind. This includes those with arthritis, Parkinson’s, and other conditions related to aging.”

The county nutrition and community center sites offer much more than just Tai Chi, though! Each location offers a unique schedule that may include weekly activities like chair Zumba, yoga, crocheting, bridge, and other activities, as well as special monthly events like Halloween parties and lectures on subjects affecting seniors. A nutritious lunch is also offered at each location daily during the week.
