Warren Hills Grad Dons Tiger Stripes As Mascot

By Andy Loigu

Gregg Wiseburn, a 2001 Warren Hills graduate and a decorated Blue Streaks wrestler, joined several mascots from around the state for “Buster’s Birthday Party” at last Sunday’s Jersey Shore Blue Claws minor league baseball game in Lakewood. Since our theme for the week is comebacks, the Blue Claws (Phillies Single-A affiliate) won in come-from-behind fashion with a 10-run eighth inning to make sure Buster’s birthday would be happy.

Wiseburn donned a Tiger suit in his role as the mascot at Princeton University’s football and basketball games. Also joining him from Division 1 college programs were the Rutgers Scarlet Knight and the Temple Owl. Minor league baseball mascots on hand were Sparkee (Somerset Patriots) and Boomer (Trenton Thunder).

Being a mascot is an enjoyable side hustle for Wiseburn, who primarily makes his living as a health and phys ed teacher at the Lawrence Township Middle School in Mercer County.

For the last 12 years he has entertained fans (especially the young ones who think the character is real) with nutty antics. He has worked at minor league and college venues in New Jersey and in the NFL, including the Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

At Warren Hills he was a two-time champion in the John Goles Tournament, winning the Outstanding Wrestler Award in 2000. He also was a district champion and regional qualifier.

He said the nimbleness and quickness he developed on the wrestling mat has helped him be a fan favorite as a mascot.
