For the fifth time in the past seven seasons, Warren Hills has won the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex field hockey championship.

The Blue Streaks scored a pair of goals in the second half and shutout Voorhees 2-0 on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the final, at Hackettstown. Ranked number six statewide, all groups, in the NJ.com Top 20, Warren Hills has a sparkling 19-1 record (only loss to Ridge) and coach Josie Potter’s team now turns its attention to the upcoming state tournament.

In a defensive struggle in which both teams had trouble maintaining their offensive flow, Warren Hills outshot a determined Voorhees team 9-3, with goal keeper Julia Webber turning aside all three of the Vikings’ tries. Voorhees now has a 16-4 record which includes three tough losses to the Blue Streaks.

Senior forward Samantha Dugan and junior midfielder Sarah Korczukowski scored the goals and Paulina Georgoutsos assisted on a goal.

The Blue Streaks have been rolling along for quite a while and have established one of the state’s most respected and feared field hockey programs over the past three decades. Earlier this month, Warren Hills earned the 700th win in the storied history of the program.

Meanwhile, in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex boys soccer tournament, the Hackettstown boys were eliminated in Flemington 1-0, by top seeded Hunterdon Central, in Saturday’s semifinal.

RARE FOOTBALL FORFEIT

The Warren Hills home football game with Summit, which was scheduled for last Friday evening, was forfeited as a precaution due to concerns about a contagious illness, the Warren Hunterdon Daily Voice reported.

School officials confirmed a pair of cases of mononucleosis and when more players began showing symptoms of the illness, the Warren Hills team physician and medical staff cancelled the game.

The game was forfeited and will not be rescheduled, according to the report. Warren Hills officials promised refunds to fans who had purchased tickets. (Editor’s Note: This Friday’s game against Rahway has also been cancelled, it was announced on Wednesday).

Hackettstown did not have a game scheduled last weekend (a “bye” week) and the Tigers hope to improve on their 1-5 record next Friday night at home against the Chatham Cougars.
