Commission: West Nile Still Active in Changing Seasons

Pictured are potential sites for mosquito breeding.

The Warren County Mosquito Control Commission is reminding Warren County residents that mosquitos and West Nile Virus are still active in spite of cooling weather.

Sixteen new samples of mosquitos have tested positive for West Nile this month, according to the commission. The samples came from across the county, including Belvidere, Phillipsburg, and Washington Township, and Pohatcong. Previous positive samples were collected in Hackettstown, Hope, and Allamuchy, among other towns.

To protect yourself, remember to use insect repellent, dump still-standing bodies of water on your property, and avoid high-mosquito times outdoors, such as dawn and dusk. September is a typical month in which humans and other mammals acquire the virus.

West Nile virus symptoms of the mild form include fever, headache, tiredness, body aches, and swollen lymph glands. While the illness can be as short as a few days, even healthy people have reported being sick for several weeks.
