For many years, Washington Borough has been lucky enough to be one of the few towns to enjoy a hometown bakery. The luck is continuing with the recent opening of Talia’s Bakery at 217 W. Washington Avenue (Route 57).

Talia’s is a family owned, family run bakery that is located in a store that has been a bakery for most of the past 30 years. Until a couple of months ago, the space had remained empty for a while. After hearing many requests from the community that Washington needed a bakery back in town, owners Mahmoud Jamhour and Hayyat Muheisen have taken on the opportunity to fill in the big shoes to serve the community’s wishes.

And they are doing just that!

The bakery specializes in Italian cookies, breads, pastries, muffins, custom cakes, gelato and specialty coffee. Anything you’d expect in a hometown bakery is there. They welcome specialty orders.

The married couple is local to Warren County with two children, Taym, 5, and Talia, 6 months old. The opportunity to open up a bakery came along when their youngest, Talia, was born.

“Children are a rizqa (blessing), and each child comes into this world along with their own blessing,” said Hayyat and Mahmoud. “This bakery is Talia’s blessing and we hope to see it flourish.”

The couple have worn many hats throughout their life. At one point Mahmoud was an English teacher while simultaneously being a baker, and Hayyat worked in the domestic violence field and could be seen often helping out in her family’s businesses. The couple both have Masters Degrees, but the bakery life is their calling.

Mahmoud backs over 15 years of experience baking, many of those years of which he learned to bake when his in-laws owned “Muheisen’s Bakery” in 2014. Previous to this, Mahmoud and his family owned a bakery in his village, Beit Anan, back in Palestine where they specialized in wedding cakes, middle eastern delights, and pita bread. Mahmoud has always wanted to open up a bakery of his own. With the love and support of his family, he is finally able to make his dream come to life.

The owners invite you to “Stop in for a treat and you might just get to meet Talia pitter pattering in her walker!”
