WCC, Abilities Partner Up On State Grant To Offer College-Based Center for Adult Transition

Program will help prepare students with intellectual and developmental disabilities for success in adult life

Warren Community College (Warren) and Abilities of Northwest Jersey Inc. (Abilities) are partnering to offer a new program to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities prepare for success in adult life, through funding by project partner Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE).

The state-funded County College Based Center for Adult Transition (CAT) Grant is designed to provide these students with the opportunity to experience higher education and receive the support and resources they need to lead full, rewarding, and independent lives.

“Warren is committed to enhancing academic learning, career exploration, skill development, inclusion, and success for all students, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Dr. William Austin, President of Warren Community College. “Our goal is for each student to leave the CAT program confidant, a self-advocate and ready for independence in employment and life.”

CAT students will participate in one-year curriculum that includes academic, life skills, and employment readiness courses, after which they will be able to sample on-campus and off-campus jobs.

As part of the program, students will receive training in resume writing, job application completion and interview skills. The program also includes a “reverse job fair” and employment placement and training services, with each student receiving the support of a job coach.

Abilities’ staff members will develop and deliver the multi-faceted academic and employment readiness curriculum, and offer professional transition and pre-employment services and support to create an inclusive environment for students.

College instructors and community employer guest speakers will also share their insights with the students, who will have the opportunity to explore several different career path options.

“The CAT program is an excellent fit with our mission to inspire people with disabilities to achieve their life goals, and provide them with the individualized support they need to be successful,” said Abilities CEO Cynthia B. Wildermuth. “Abilities is very happy to collaborate with WCC to help these students successfully transition to adult community employment and independent living.”

The CAT program is for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities between the ages of 18-24, residing in Warren County. Tuition is waived for the 2022 – 2023 school year. Program Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 2:30 pm. To be eligible, CAT students must have a high school diploma or equivalent and potential to successfully achieve the goal of employment!
